    An easy method to make online videos of your classwork. Explore the posted Sewing Project video of handsewn toys made in my eighth grade Skills for Life class. We posted this to the school website so that parents and students could enjoy the full range of completed projects. The students truly enjoy seeing their work on the Website. Educators are given a free, unlimited account - so go ahead, be creative!

    American Culinary Federation Resources This site offers a collection of videos that could be used in your lessons.
    I especially like the Chocolate Chip Cookie demonstration. It introduces the commercial kitchen to students with a very familiar recipe.
    Check out the knife skills demonstrations, which I would think would be important in the high school level.

    Turning Trash into Toys
    A TED talk concerning toys made from the trash in India. These simple toys offer creative methods for teaching Science and Math concepts. These can be easily replicated in the Family and Consumer Science classroom, especially the child development classes.
    The Magic Washing Machine: another TED talk.
    The importance of the washing machine is discussed, what it means to the women and children of the world. It has economic and educational ramifications. After watching this video, give us all some ideas that we can use in the classroom. I'm thinking it will relate well to economic freedom and time management.

    Food Safety - Teaching through Video Games.
    Without a doubt, Middle School Students love video games. There has been some talk in educational research about how this media form can help with learning. Rutgers University and New Mexico State University have teamed up to see just how true this is. Try this link to see how well you do with Food Safety through the NinjaKitchen Game.

    A free digital magazine produced through the American Culinary Federation. This is FREE and students can have it delivered directly to their personal email accounts. Reviews of cooking methods, history, career paths. This is a very professionally done magazine and would have uses for us both as educators and students. Check it out and subscribe.

    As part of the Smithsonian Institute travelling exhibit, Key Ingedients, they created a Teacher Guide to integrate the History of American Food into the curriculum. Even though the exhibit has moved on there a many lessons that can be integrated easily into the Foods curriculum at Middle and High School Levels. It is worth reviewing this: key_ingredients.pdf.

    Using ChooseMyPlate.gov for nutritional analysis (middle school)
    Authentic evaluation of our diet is very eye opening; with the quest for healthier students, this is an excellant jumping off point -This is a revised edition of an assignment I have been using for several years and I can say that students have positively changed some of their eating habits. There are some other nutritional analysis sites available, but many are connected to profit focused entities. The Word document I give students is attached. SStinson

    A Video produced through Xtranormal.com, interviewing Ellen Richards, one of the founders of the Home Economics movement. Xtranormal offers an animated video maker. It is easy to create, using your own script, with one or two characters. The above link is through the educational section, which offers a safer format if using with students. Students could easily use this site for project creations. Please feel free to use this created video in your class when introducing "Home Economics" and "Family & Consumer Science".
